Bronx is a borough in Bronx County, one of the five counties of New York City.
The community was named for settler John (or Jonas) Bronck, a Swedish sea captain who settled here in 1639.

It is in the Eastern Standard time zone. Elevation is 75 feet.The population, at the time of the 2000 census, was 1,332,650.
Later settled by waves of immigrants, beginning with Irish and Italian railroad workers in the 1840s.
The area suffered steep declines in the 1960s, with the loss of housing and jobs, and a rise in crime and drug use.
