Profile for Bronx, New York, NY

Bronx is bounded by East River, Harlem River, Long Island Sound. The Bronx is the only borough of New York that is part of the mainland; the other four are islands.

Anne Hutchinson, exiled by Boston Puritans, settled here in 1644; Indians killed members of her colony.

Later settled by waves of immigrants, beginning with Irish and Italian railroad workers in the 1840s.

The area suffered steep declines in the 1960s, with the loss of housing and jobs, and a rise in crime and drug use.

Bronx received national attention for a 1990 fire at a social club, killing 87 people.
