Once a shipping, fishing and whaling center, Chatham developed as a resort in the 1870s.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 15. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2.2 per 1,000 people.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the community as one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2007.
