The community was named after Elizabeth College, which, in turn, was named after Anne Elizabeth Watts, the mother-in-law of Charles B. King, who chose Charlotte as the location of the college.

In 1902, with the completion of a trolley line to the area, Elizabeth began to grow rapidly.
The neighborhood became part of the city of Charlotte in 1907.
