The neighborhood is on Duwamish Peninsula, on Puget Sound.
The area's first non-native residents, under the leadership of Arthur Denny settled here in 1851. Almost all of that original party moved shortly thereafter to present-day downtown.
In 1902, West Seattle incorporated as a city. Five years later, Seattle annexed the community.
The state legislature, in the mid-1990s, passed a bill that would have allowed West Seattle to secede from Seattle proper. The governor, however, vetoed the bill.
