The community was named for Col. Abraham Owen, killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe.

The last legal public hanging in the U.S. took place here in 1936. Rainey Bethea, a 23-year-old black man, was executed for the rape and murder of an elderly white woman.

After the Civil War, Owensboro grew as a processing and shipping center for tobacco and whiskey.
