Profile for Dodge City, Kansas, KS

Dodge City is on the Arkansas River.

The Army built the fort here to protect travelers on the nearby Santa Fe Trail. Huge herds of buffalo were slaughtered in the region, with Dodge City the center for tanning and shipping the hides.

With the extinction of the buffalo, the community became a rugged cow town. The last cattle drive through the area was in 1885.

For a short period of time, before the community gained a real cemetery in 1878, Boot Hill Cemetery was a common burial ground. Authorities had little control of the town and gun fights were so common that people were said to "die with their boots on."

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 173. The number of murders and homicides was 1. The violent crime rate was 6.8 per 1,000 people.
