Site of the Seneca Oil Spring, which was shown by Seneca Indians to Franciscan missionary Joseph DeLa Roch D'Allion in 1627. This was the first written record of petroleum in North America

Early laws banned the loose running of rams and boars and set a bounty of $5 for each wolf killed; residents were also fined $1 if they permitted Canada thistles to grow on their property
