The community was named after Elbert H. Gary, lawyer and steel company official
[NOTE: This is not the only community in Indiana named Gary. For links to other places called Gary, IN, see the Duplicate Names box at right.]

It is in the Central Standard time zone. Elevation is 600 feet.

Gary is on Lake Michigan
When U.S. Steel selected this site for operations in 1905, it was desolate and uninhabited; the city boomed almost overnight.

Local employment in the steel industry plummeted after the oil shortage of 1979, when the demand for large cars declined.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 797. The number of murders and homicides was 68. The violent crime rate was 7.8 per 1,000 people.
Gary received national attention for 1918 train wreck which killed 63 circus performers
