Lafayette is on the Wabash River
The French built a fortified settlement near here in 1717, trading goods for furs

The first steamboat reached Lafayette in 1826. River traffic, the National Road and the Wabash & Erie Canal brought commerce and settlers

ALCOA opened an aluminum plant here in 1937; National Homes began making prefabricated homes in 1940
