Roanoke Island is between Pamlico and Albemarle sounds
Site of the first English settlement in what is now the United States. An expedition of seven ships and 108 men landed in August 1585, but returned to England

A second expedition landed in 1587. When supply ships finally returned to the island three years later, the colony had vanished
