Muncie is on the White River.

Former and merged names include:
· Monsy
· Monthee
· Muncey Town
· Munseetown

When gas was discovered here in 1876, the hole was condemned and plugged. A decade later, as large gas fields developed in the east, a well was sunk and Muncie became a boom town.

The five Ball Brothers from Buffalo, NY, moved their families and their glass-making operations here, and soon took a leading role in economic and civic affairs. Ball State University was one recipient of their philanthropy.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 290. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 4.3 per 1,000 people.
