East Hampton is on the south shore.

Settled in 1648, when the Dutch and English battled for control of the island. Evolved from agricultural community to wealthy enclave and artists colony in the 1800s.

According to one local jingle, Southampton was for the sporting rich, Bridgehampton for the nearly rich and East Hampton for the really rich.

Artist Jackson Pollock died in a car accident here in 1956.
