The first Cliff House was built in 1863, attracting wealthy San Franciscans and several U.S. presidents. Millionaire Adolph Sutro, who would later become San Francisco mayor, bought it
in 1881. The structure burned in a spectacular fire on Christmas Day in 1894
Sutro rebuilt in grand style. The building survived the 1906 earthquake, but wasdestroyed by fire the following year. A third Cliff House was built by Sutro's daughter in 1909. The property declined over the years and was acquired by the National Park Service in 1977. It is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
