Abraham Lincoln tried cases here, including the famous "Almanac Trial" in 1858, when he successfully defended Duff Armstrong against a murder charge. When a key prosecution witness testified that he had seen the attack by light of a high moon, Lincoln used the almanac to show that moonset had occurred just an hour later
