The neighborhood was platted in 1848. Seventeen years later, in 1865, it was incorporated into Nashville.
The area grew rapidly in the 1870s with the arrival of many German immigrants.
Ad hoc backyard slaughterhouses gave way to full-scale packing houses in the 20th century.
