Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 60. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2.8 per 1,000 people.
La Porte received national attention for 1908 house fire in which Belle Gunness and her three children were believed killed. Investigation showed that Gunness murdered a series of male suitors, raising doubts that the woman's body found inside the home was hers
