The community name combines "glen" and "Coe," maiden name of the wife of Walter Gurnee, a founder.

Glencoe is on Lake Michigan.
The first non-native, Anson Taylor, moved into the area in 1835.

The railroad arrived in 1855, enhancing the prospects of the community.

Fourteen years later, in 1869, the community was incorporated.

In the times around the turn of the 20th century, many Chicago residents built summer homes on Glencoe's lakeshore.
