The community is mostly a working-class town.

Historically, the city has been an Italian enclave. However, Mexicans have begun to be attracted to the area.

Former and merged names include:
· Fort Sheridan Village

In the late 19th century, the city changed its name to Fort Sheridan Village in honor of the local military outpost. The name change only lasted a handful of years. In 1904, due to the reprehensible behavior of Fort Sheridan soldiers, it returned to being Highwood.
