Essex is in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, on Lake Champlain and the Boquet River.
Former and merged names include:
· Elizabeth
The settlement was burned during the Revolution, then later rebuilt as a harbor town. Nineteenth-century industries included shipbuilding, iron, stone quarrying, leather and textile manufacturing.

Growth ended with the railroads. The community has preserved its historic structures, and continues as a resort area and site of a ferry crossing to Vermont.
