Northbrook is on the Chicago River.

Former and merged names include:
· Shermerville

Following Chicago's 1871 fire, the community experienced much growth, which was facilitated by the arrival of a railway line. Bricks could easily be sent into the quickly re-building Chicago from the community's brickyard.

The village for incorporated in 1901.

The village's name was changed to Northbrook in 1923, in an attempt to improve the community's somewhat seedy reputation.

Filming location for:
· 1985 movie, "The Breakfast Club"
· 1984 movie, "Sixteen Candles"

Well-known residents have included:
· Ben Agosto, 2006 Olympics silver medal winner (ice dancing)
