The community was developed by George Pullman as a model town for the workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company.

Pullman employees rented their homes; they were not allowed to buy them. When workers struck in 1894, federal troops were sent out. They arrested labor leader Eugene Debs.
After the strike, the state Supreme Court ordered the company to divest itself of its residential property holdings in Pullman.
The Pullman company manufactured its last railroad car in 1981.
