Skokie is on the North Branch of the Chicago River.
Former and merged names include:
· Niles Center
In 1910, a fire devasted the community, destroying most of the village's downtown.

The village's population, spurred by the post-war boom and the construction of an area highway, increased dramatically in the middle of the 20th century.

Jewish Holocaust survivors settled here after World War II.

Skokie received national attention for a proposed Nazi march here in 1977. The plan sparked an impassioned debate between those who supported the right to free speech and those who were offended by the prospect of Nazis marching through the streets of a community populated by thousands of holocaust survivors.
