Erected by the French early in the 18th century to control the Straits of Mackinac, Fort Michilimackinac became a great fur trading center but was abandoned during the French and Indian War. It was later occupied by the British and was their only garrison on the Great Lakes during the Revolution. The site became a municipal park in 1857 and Michigan?s second state park in
1904. The stockade and buildings representing its occupancy by French, British, and American troops have been reconstructed
