Winnetka is on Lake Michigan.

The first settlers to the area arrived in the 1830s.

In the 1850s, a railway line into Chicago was initiated, enabling the community to grow beyond its agricultural roots.

The village was incorporated in 1869.

Site of Guinness World Record for "Biggest Garage Sale," achieved in 1994 when the Winnetka Congregational Church raised $214,085.99 in a single day

Ranked No. 1 healthiest town (among communities of 10,000-14,999 population), by Chicago magazine, October 2005
