The first general store opened here in 1880.
Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 9. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 1.2 per 1,000 people.
Sandpoint received national attention for 1992 deaths at nearby Ruby Ridge. A teen-aged boy, his mother and a federal marshal were killed in a shootout between FBI agents and separatist Randy Weaver.
