Planned city, developed by dry-goods merchant Alexander Turney Stewart for his employees.

Growth slowed after Stewart's death in 1876. Development was again sparked in the early 1900s, when Doubleday built a printing plant, Country Life Press, here.

Roosevelt Field was a center for early aviation. Charles Lindbergh took off from here in the "Spirit of St. Louis" in 1927. Harriet Quimby received her pilot's license here in 1911 - the first American woman to do so

With the opening of other airports after World War II, activity at Roosevelt Field ebbed and finally ceased in 1951. A shopping center replaced the airfield
