Frederick L. Maytag founded the appliance company here in 1893. The manufacturer served as the mainstay of the local economy until Whirlpool bought the firm and announced it would leave town in 2006.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 15. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 1 per 1,000 people.

Newton received national attention for a 1969 plane crash which killed former heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano.
