Winterset is between the Middle River and Cedar Creek.

A local farmer named Jesse Hiatt developed an apple that he proclaimed the best tasting in the world. He called it the "Hawkeye" after his native state. He later sold the rights to brothers in Louisiana, who renamed the apple, the "Delicious."

Site of the covered bridges of Madison County, made famous by Robert Waller's novel.
