Townspeople came up with an odd tourist gimmick in the 1950s. Local police would stop motorists with out-of-state license plates and escort them downtown, where they would be met by the Welcome World Committee and given overnight lodging, dinner and a trip to the swamp. The tradition ended when the interstates opened.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 93. The number of murders and homicides was 4. The violent crime rate was 6 per 1,000 people.
