Gainesville is between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
The agricultural economy suffered in the early 1900s because of boll weevil damage to local cotton crops.

Prosperity arrived after Gainesville was chosen in 1905 as the site of the University of Florida. The community boomed after World War II with the influx of thousands of veterans going to college on the GI Bill.

The Buchholz High School band marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2000.
