Jacksonville is a city in Duval County.
It is the county seat.
The community was named after Andrew Jackson.

During Reconstruction, became a popular winter resort.
City and county governments merged in the late 1960s, forming a single municipality. The downtown commercial district has undergone dramatic redevelopment.
Local lawyer and educator James Weldon Johnson wrote the poem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in 1900. After his brother set the words to music, the song became known as a black national anthem.
