Tampa is at the mouth of the Hillsborough River on Tampa Bay.
Ponce de L?on visited the site in 1521.

Settlement of the area began after the establishment in 1832 of Fort Brooke, a central post during the Second Seminole War.

The state's first citrus nursery opened here in 1880. Vicente Martinez Ybor and Ignacio Haya started the region's first cigar factory six years later.

Henry B. Plant built a railroad here in 1883, and a luxury hotel eight years later.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 5,733. The number of murders and homicides was 41. The violent crime rate was 17.9 per 1,000 people.
