Lewes is a city in Sussex County, in the Seaford metro area.

The community was named after the county seat of Sussex, England.

The latitude of Lewes is 38.774N. The longitude is -75.139W.

Lewes is on Delaware Bay.
Founded by Dutch colonists in 1631; the settlement was quickly wiped out in an Indian attack.

The community later developed as a commercial fishing port.

The British bombarded the city during the War of 1812. During World War II, towers were built along the beach to watch for German invaders.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 3. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 1 per 1,000 people.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the community as one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2006.
