Peter Stuyvesant, intending to take control from the Swedes, supervised construction of Fort Casimir here in 1651.

Founded by Peter Stuyvesant in 1651 to serve as New Netherland?s capital on the Delaware, New Castle continued as the capital of colonial Delaware until 1776. The community flourished as a transportation hub until it was bypassed by the long-distance rail lines.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 28. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 5.7 per 1,000 people.
