Irondequoit is on Lake Ontario, Irondequoit Bay and the Genesee River.

The town was built on the site of large Algonquian town.

19th-century trains brought vacationers from Rochester, but summer retreats declined by 1930.

Population boomed in the 1920s and again in the 1950s.

The Natatorium, which opened here in 1925, was billed as the "largest saltwater swimming pool in the world." The venture was a bust. It closed six years later and was converted to a bingo hall
