The community was named for a town in England.

Greenwich is on Long Island Sound.
In 1640, agents of the New Haven Colony paid the Indians 25 coats for land here.
Magazine publisher Henry Luce married Clare Boothe Luce here in 1935. His wife went on to become a congresswoman and ambassador to Italy.

After years of resisting efforts to allow non-residents to use local beaches, the town in 2002 opened the areas - at a price of $10 per person and $20 to park.

Greenwich received national attention for the 1975 slaying of 15-year-old Martha Moxley. Twenty-seven years later, neighbor Michael Skakel, a cousin of the Kennedy clan, was convicted of her murder.
