Litchfield is on the Bantam River.

During much of the 18th century, the town was an outpost and trading center for Connecticut's northwest frontier.

When patriots tore down the statue of George II that stood in New York City, they carried it to Litchfield, where it was melted down for bullets.

Well-known residents have included:
