Canon City is on the Arkansas River at the mouth of the Royal Gorge

Developed as a supply depot during the Pikes Peak gold rush in 1859

Alferd Packer, convicted of murder and cannibalism, was imprisoned here. Local tradition says that at his first trial, the Democratic judge told him, "There were seven Democrats in Hinsdale County and you ate five of them."

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 32. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2 per 1,000 people.
