The community was named for an island in the legend of King Arthur.

19th-century smugglers often stashed cargoes here.

The Avalon Casino Terrace Ballroom was wildly popular during the big-band era. Swing music was broadcast from here across the country.

Chewing gum king William Wrigley bought the island in 1919. For 30 years, the island was the site of the Chicago Cubs spring training camp. Members of the Wrigley family turned their holdings over to the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy in 1975.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 26. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 7.8 per 1,000 people.
Avalon received national attention for 1981 death of Natalie Wood, who drowned after going overboard from the family yacht.
