Bishop is in the Owens Valley, bordered by the Sierra Nevada.
Cattlemen and sheepherders used the valley as a grazing area while passing on to other destinations. By 1912, celery, potatoes, alfalfa, wheat and corn were grown here.

Most of the land in the Owens Valley eventually was purchased by Los Angeles; in 1913 the Los Angeles Aqueduct was completed, supplying water to southern California.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 15. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 4.1 per 1,000 people.
