Home of Commodore Stephen Decatur, suppressor of the Barbary pirates. The first private residence on Lafayette Square, it was built in 1818-1819. Decatur occupied it only shortly, dying in the house on the evening of March 22, 1820, after a fatal duel with Commodore James Barron
