During the same period, 307 people died from cancer. The county death rate from cancer was 2.6 per thousand people, compared with 2.1 per thousand statewide.
A reported 13 people died in motor vehicle accidents.
The average age of people living in Jefferson County at the time of the 2000 census was 38.5, compared with 35.8 statewide and 36.2 nationwide.
