Former place namesThe ePodunk database of former place names includes thousands of names culled from hundreds of published sources. The database is not limited to official names, but encompasses: · plat names · post office names · railroad names · outdated spellings · communities that were merged or incorporated into the existing community · informal names The database is intended as a finding aid for history and genealogy researchers trying to connect historic materials with current resources such as local libraries, archives, cemeteries and historical societies. ePodunk also provides the titles of published sources on regional place names. At present, our "former place names" entries are restricted to prior names of existing communities. Listings currently include more than 7,000 former names in 37 states, with additional records added regularly. We welcome additions or corrections.
