On Nov. 10, 1979, a 106-car freight train carrying explosive and poisonous chemicals derailed at the intersection of Mavis Road and Dundas in Canada's sixth largest city, just west of Toronto.

A possible leak of deadly chlorine gas led to the immediate evacuation of 218,000 residents.

The evacuation and resettlement were done so efficiently that they became models for metropolitan disaster planning.
